My home page is totally blank with no categories. I have a product and I know its in a category, but it doesnt show up at all. I’m able to search the product or use the site map to find it, but still no categories! Do I need two categories for it to show up or something?

Make sure all categories are active. Inactive ones will be grayed-out. If a toplevel category is inactive the ones below do not show.

There is no root category.... When I create a new category, it wants a parent category. I choose Root Catalog. But there is no Root Catalog in the list of categories.

I have made 2 test categories and 2 test products and while everything is enabled/active nothing shows up on the home page.

I’ve solved this annoying problem. What you have to do is make a second category under whatever is your top category. You can’t just have one category, you must have at least two.

For example:

Category “All Products” which is under “Root Catelog”

then category “Hats” which is under “All Products”

only Hats will show up.

I had the same problem.  I’ve since worked out the issue which may help others.

1) go to System > Manage Stores
2) click the “Main Website Store” link under Store Name
3) make sure the dropdown for “Root Category *” is set to you top level catergory.  In my case, it was “All Products”

After this, they catergories showed in the main navigation grin

Nice.  I just set mine under the Default Category to make them display - that setting makes far more sense, though.  Way to go.
