We have our own server and it runs either php 4 and php 5 . When php 5 is used we need to use *.php5.
Because of this, I have put AddHandler x-httpd-php5 .php in the .htaccesfile but it keeps giving an Internal server error 500. We are using suPHP to keep php5 running in cgi mode.

My .htaccess looks like this:

php_flag magic_quotes_gpc off
php_flag short_open_tag on

DirectoryIndex index.php
AddHandler x-httpd-php5 .php

RewriteEngine on

RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^/media/
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^/skin/
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^/js/
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-l

RewriteRule .* index.php

Does somebody have any sugestions how to solve my problem?

I had a similar issue and I had to comment out in the .htaccess file:
php_flag magic_quotes_gpc off
php_flag short_open_tag on

I solved the problem with installing the php5-cgi. After I installed it into the cgi-bin it was running.
