We’ve recently launched a Magento site and would love your feedback: http://www.vernonlibrarysupplies.com

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ABOUT THE SITE:

The design is based off the amazing free template here: http://blog.templates-master.com/free-magento-classic-theme/ by TemplatesMaster and there are several modules and elements that were built with the help of this forum and users of this forum including:

Adam Martin of Tweakmag - http://www.tweakmag.com/

Joseph Edmonds of Edmonds Commerce - http://www.edmondscommerce.co.uk/

The COG_IT_SOLUTIONS team

Sagi E. Shkedy - Simplicity Consulting Inc. - http://www.simplicityc.com

TBT_Enhancedgrid module

The thread here: http://www.magentocommerce.com/boards/viewthread/3698/P0/ which is about incorporating php into your static blocks.

here: http://www.magentocommerce.com/boards/viewthread/10614/#t66062 which enables “call for quote” pricing

and a TON of others…

I love the Magento community and thank everyone from whom I’ve borrowed brilliance from!!!! ;o)

It’s also hosted by Nexcess - http://www.nexcess.net/magento/ on their Magento Secure Isolated Platform and I have been very happy with their support, security and speed. They have helped me on several issues above and beyond the call of duty.

Now, please hurt my feelings and let me know what we can improve! THANKS SO MUCH!

- Robyn

I think from a usability standpoint it really is pretty good. I’ve gone through the scenarios and it works quite well. I do have to ask what you are doing to increase the performance - particularly on the search function. It’s probably one of the fastest that I can remember on a Magento install. Any clues as to your setup would be greatly appreciated.

Dan

On the page http://www.vernonlibrarysupplies.com/testimonials, link “Add Testimonial” could lead direct on the form (not at the top of the page)

Thanks for the replies!

dan_w - we were running really slow on our VPS even with ALL the modifications done that I could find on all the forum posts, so we switched to nexcess with their specific magento hosting, and that is the only change that made all the difference that I could possibly attribute the speed to.

adjustware - really good feedback, perhaps it would make even more sense to have a form directly on the testimonial page itself...might be less confusing. I’ll add it to our “phase two” list.

I’d also be interested to know if anyone has had success with the “click to chat” module and if they find it helps to increase sales. It’s something we are considering adding. Thoughts?

Wow, just installed Click to Chat ( module here ) in under one hour and it is totally functioning and bug free. What a great module! I’ve got to get my CSRs trained and ready before I launch it, but so far, so good!

Hi,

I find the site about the same as other a lot of magento stores I have seen here, I’m based in the UK so I guess its not that bad, but I would say its not much faster than a VPS, do you have to pay much for your Magento Secure Isolated Platform?

Is this store live yet, if so has it slowed down with traffic and does it get a lot of traffic, a PR5 I guess it will?

Nice design and easy to navigate.

Well done smile

Hi jellybabys,

Yes, it has slowed a little since launch, but its negligible. I haven’t launched click to chat yet, and that is one of our concerns, that it might slow us down. As for hosting, we pay $80/mo at Nexcess for their M-SIP200 plan. They have a plan below that for only $30/mo that we considered, but I wanted something scalable for the integration with our accounting system and other third party applications. We still have a lot of optimizations planned for “phase two” of the site and perhaps even a “phase three”, but I think for most sites, the $30 plan would probably work just as well. For us the security of the server was a big deal as well. I didn’t want to muck around with PCI compliance too much.

I’m sure someone who knew what they were doing could get a VPS running faster in some cases, but for someone who is not a system admin, just a front end developer, this was the way to go for us.

Mageworx, thanks so much for the comments. So you can tell that the design was based off a template and executed by a developer and not a designer, huh? ;o) We are actually starting a new graphic designer today at the company, so I will definitely add your suggestions to her list for web design overhaul. I appreciate the feedback, especially about the buttons, because that is an easy fix that I think might make a big impact. Thanks!
