Hi all,

Anyone has any idea if category import is coming up with Release 1.0? As of the last BETA release, product-category mappings could be imported with the category ids. But this may not suit if we have lots of categories.

Has anybody worked this out yet?

I’d like to us the Import All Products function WITH a category mapping by name (the entire tree structure).

Now I can only import using category_id in the CSV. But I would like to see this:

category_1
category_2
...
category_x

And also all the category setting should then be importable. Or just those that deviate.

Why? Because I have a complicated category system that requires importing over a hundred categories, linked with products.

And besides, if osCommerce’s Easypopulate can do it - so should Magento!!

Actually yes, we have the beta of the tool ready. We should be posting it here shortly.

Any update on this? Could REALLY do with it for setting up my new store with LOADS of Categories…

Same here.... I really could use this tool, can’t believe it isn’t built into an import/export profile, as a default.

Is the way Magento handles and structures it’s categories that complicated?

Alright guys the long wait is over. We are finally introducing a category importer tool (BETA) to help import your categories in bulk.

Please keep in mind that this is still work in progress and we have opted for functionality over fully polishing the app. Use at your own risks but it should be good enough to import categories in bulk in your store.

A little more info wouldn’t go a miss I know there is a sample CSV file, but what does it look like when imported and how are we to know how to set it out?

I have LOTS of categories, sub categories and more… so no idea where to start!

It’s impossible for users such as myself to modify the script and get it out to everyone sooner when it’s not made available to download… which defeats the purpose of open source.  So we took 4 days to develop our own based on the export_all_products.csv from the default Magento installation. 

All you have to do is update your spreadsheet (file attached and color coded so you can see the values we added) by entering the category_name and up to 3 levels of layered navigation and PRESTO!!!

We have also added up to 5 levels of tiered pricing and COMINGT SOON is an easy way to create bundles using the import function.

Stay tuned… we hope to launch a stable version on Saturday November 1st…

PS: We hope that you will take the script and contribute your skills and expertise to make it better.

Will the excel table import of the categories work for more than 3 subcategories.  Can you add more?
