Well, it has certainly been a learning process, but I think I can get magento to work, for my purposes.
see attachments for screenshots, the site is being updated to version 1 right now

It’s been a couple of weeks of off and on development, and there are many changes I would like to make, but this is what I have so far, and at this point I am going to stop working until release milestone 1 so I won’t have to do a bunch of extra work
This was a very rough hack job, so I can’t release this as a theme. It just plain wouldn’t work, especially if you don’t run version 0.7. In the future I do hope to make this downloadable for you all, but I don’t know when its likely to be, so lets just say it won’t happen at all.
It’s mostly a visual change from the default, but there are some tweaks
-I can now load whatever I want easily into the top navigation
-Custom CSS was added
-Left hand navigation made standard
-Search box (and left navigation) moved
-Spacing changed
-Images changed (background gradients removed, logo changed, search box image, )
-Removed all magento CMS pages except 404 and transferred CMS responsibility over to wordpress (links not visible yet)
-Favicon removed for now
-Languages and currency removed
I was going to change the color scheme, but once I started putting in the company’s design scheme it seemed to work quite well with magento’s default, so i mostly left it alone.
files that were changed (there might have been more, I should have kept better track)
-boxes.css
-reset.css
-catalog/navigation/top.phtml
-category/page.phtml
-callouts/left_col.phtml
-callouts/right_col.phtml
-catalogsearch/form.mini.phtml
-directory/currency.phtml
-page/html/breadcrumbs.phtml
-page/html/footer.phtml
-page/html/links.phtml
-various images
thanks
i hadn’t noticed the new window links for the featured product, thanks for pointing that out. so much goes into these things its easy to miss teh details like that, heh.
the wordpress integration happened such that i installed wordpress in the site root (as the homepage) and the magento as a seperate part of the site in /shop. i skinned them both to look similar, and then linked some stuff in the wordpress to the stuff in magento, and vice versa (really just the top nav and featured products). eventually the wordpress featured products will be random on page load and will be changeable via a simple text file with links.
