I’ve had great success implementing a “Featured Products” block using the techniques described in Andy’s wiki article and Ron’s post earlier in this thread.  I did stumble a couple of times though, so I thought I’d put together a step-by-step summary.

Hey, I got this working with no problems. However, if I put a product on special, it still shows the full price of the product, instead of the reduced price?
When looking at the specific categories and the product itself, the price is reduced, so it seems like the Featured Product part doesn’t check for specials when getting the price?

Cheers,

- Jesper

EDITED:

Problem with grid list:

I followed the instruction from @BoongleFeet on post http://www.magentocommerce.com/boards/viewreply/72839/ and it works.

Now the problem with the grid is that sometimes it displays correctly and sometime it gets messed up (see attached files). How do I fix this problem??

Thanks in advance!!
David

I’m having issues trying to display featured products on my home page, currently using the latest Magento (1.1.8)

I even tried following what BoongleFeet had wrote but nothing appears on my home page and I don’t see any errors either.

So what could I be doing wrong?

I seem to have gotten it working,

Not sure how or why because I tried to retrace my steps a few times before posting without any different results.

Thanks anyways.

Thank you for this code. Ihave a little problem with it.
In the CMS page (homepage) works perfect, but if i’m try to put to sidebar it is not ordered (randomly) and not the needed number of products let see. (If i set: category_id="4" num_products="2", then give me back the all featured products)
I use, 1.2.0.2.

Thanks for the answers!

I’ve had great success implementing a “Featured Products” block using the techniques described in Andy’s wiki article and Ron’s post earlier in this thread.  I did stumble a couple of times though, so I thought I’d put together a step-by-step summary.

My aim was to have show a “Featured Products” block on the front page of my site, with the ability to restrict the products shown to a particular category, or show products from all categories.  I wanted to have a random selection of my featured products displayed, and I wanted the structure and styling of the block to match the regular product grid display, minus the toolbars bottom and top.  I didn’t want the featured products to appear above every product_list block, which is what Andy’s wiki article does.

Here’s how it’s done:

1: Follow Step 1 in Andy’s wiki article.

It is a simple hack, but currently I haven’t time for good looking code…
I hope you can use it too:

In the sidebar xxx.phtml file simply check:

isset($this->num_products)? $this->num_products $this->num_products1;
isset(
$this->orderby)? $this->orderby $this->orderby 'rand()';

Thanks to everyone that has contributed to this, it really should be a feature in Magento.
I followed Bunglefeet’s instructions, but kept the list mode in “List”
It lists properly however I am missing the description for items; can someone please let me know what I might be missing?

Thanks

If anyone can help out with this I would appreciate it. I am trying to finish this is weekend.
Thanks smile

I figured it out:
add
->addAttributeToSelect(’short_description’) to Bunglefeet’s featured.php file.

Hello. I’ve had the featured extension work well until my upgrade to 1.3.0. No it just grabs random products and shows them instead of the ones I’ve specified as featured in the product’s attribute.

Anyone knows how to addapt it to version 1.3.0???

THANKS
