Change Customer Type via URL or PHP

I’m looking for a simple way to change a guest’s customer type. I plan on sending a special value from referring sites, via GET URL Params, that will determine what customer type the guest will have.

External site> PASSES GET PARAM FOR GUEST TYPE > Magento Store > GET’S PARAM FROM URL AND CHANGES CUSTOMER TYPE

Is there a simple method I can pass via URL, similar to changing the store, that can be used to change the customer’s type? Or some type of snippet I can use maybe in the head.phtml file?

Alternatively,

if there’s any way to automatically apply a catalog rule via the same technique, that would work as well.

Thanks!

I can figure out how to get the customer group ID, but cannot figure out how to set the customer group id.

$_myGroupId = Mage::getSingleton(’customer/session’)->getCustomerGroupId();

and not sure if this is going in the right direction
Mage::getSingleton(’customer/session’)->setcustomer_group_id(array("customer_group_id"=>1));

Trying to get same functionality so that someone responding to a campaign can be put into a customer group. Any luck figuring this out?
