My German is a bit rusty so entschuldigung for not typing this in your language.
We are based in the UK and ship throughout Europe. We want to get a .de version of our shop to target the German market more directly. We sell specialist healthcare equipment so please don’t be afraid you will be helping competition
I’ve been struggling to find a comprehensive guide on the applicable laws regarding distance selling in Germany. I was hoping you know a few rules from experience, or that perhaps you can point me to a German or English site which lists the rules and regulations.
I’ve heard that if you operate from a .de you have to have a returns address in Germany, is that right? If so, can this be circumvented by having a PO box in Germany which forwards the returned goods to us in England?
I also wonder about the “must have” payment options. We can offer credit cards, bank transfers and PayPal. Are there any specific German ones we should offer?
This one is a specialist question but perhaps some of you sell healthcare goods already. Are there any special restrictions on personal hygiene and healthcare products such as perhaps manuals must be in German, extended warranties, insurance etc.? I’m also curious to find out which products qualify for the lower mehrwertssteuer/VAT. I believe you have a 5% rate.
Before launch, we will have things checked by an appropriate commerce law specialist but at this stage I would like to do some homework and hopefully find out most answers roughly myself.
I would sincerely appreciate to hear your answers on these. Thanks!
