How to implement Browse by Manufacturer / Brand (or any attribute) revisisted - there must be a better way!

I’ve seen this post: http://www.magentocommerce.com/boards/viewthread/19982/ about trying to solve the browse by brand problem people are asking about.

I find the solution using the advanced search trick unsatisfactory. The other way of doing it by using a Brands category is also unsatisfactory as it adds unnecesary management issues having to maintain something that is really a product attribute in categories… anyway, boo-hoo, there must be a custom solution for this.

The way I see it is:

It’s easy to create your list of brands/manufacturers etc from the attributes so that’s step 1 checked.

Now, we need to turn these into links. Surely it’s possible to create a custom route and “Attribute"Controller that will process our route and retrieve the products for the given attribute then prepare the display for a copy of the normal product list. Just like the CategoryController does. There is this post: http://www.magentocommerce.com/boards/viewthread/11943/ that seems to give a hint but does not elaborate and has no solution.

Any ideas anyone? Lee Saferite smile?

Cheers!

I’m interested in this too… creating a new controller that will allow us to browse by attributes, but that differs from layered navigation in that clicking on an attribute does not append that criteria. Advanced search works as a temporary fix, but the results pages are too generic and I’d like to put in some custom routing in the URLs too.

I’m spent some time override the default layer view models and controllers to create my own attribute view, but so far it’s a mess. I think I’m going to start fresh using a new controller that will allow me to generate pages like catalog/attribute/[attribute-code]/[attribute-value].

In the meantime I think I’m just going to categorize the products into categories by hand, and perhaps even write a script that uses some sort of attribute-to-category mapping to automatically update the product categories based on their attributes. Not an elegant solution by any means.

Well, since my last post, we created our own Browse By (almost any attribute) extension that does what we wanted as outlined in this thread. We can now use any attribute of type drop-down or multi select or price for our browse by navigation. The URLs are reasonably pretty. You can see it in action on: Return2Health

Ok, that looks nicely done phlux0r. Is this done with your own extension, or did you eventually buy one of the existing ones?
We looking into a nice solution too, yours looks perfect for our venture;-)

Terrific work.  I’ve been trying to get something to work for brands/manufacturers as well.

Any chance you can publish as an extension, or even some raw source code so we can adapt it?

Thanks, Joe

So I have a couple of questions:

1) Will this work in enterprise

2) on this page: http://demo.free-magentoextensions.com/professional_banners/index.php/manufacturers/view/?id=2, I notice that it shows the manufacturers on the left hand navigation.  What I would prefer is if it displayed exactly like a category page.  So, for this example, it wouldn’t show all the manufactures (just that it was filtered by Apple) and then it would show other filterable attributes: color, weight, etc.

Is this possible?

Thanks

I posted a module that allows the user to browse products by attribute defined in module config. Please, note that it needs testing.

Or just use a brand category which is built in, we saw it working on a site and works very effectively.
