After noting some downtime issues recently with Magentocommerce.com - it has come to our attention that it has had a possible impact on stores.

When Magentocommerce went down this afternoon - the admin area on all of our hosted stores became non-responsive. As a test, we thought perhaps the version checking facility in the admin (to check for new messages/updates) might be hanging and causing an issue.

So, I added,

127.0.0.1 magentocommerce.com www.magentocommerce.com

To the /etc/hosts file, then after trying to access the admin was immediate without any hang/stall. This immediately resolved the issue, but is not an ideal solution, we shall be adding this issue to the bug tracker.

We were wondering if anyone else had noted a similar issue.

Thank you thank you!  We were getting masses of tickets about this and were at a loss as to what was going on!  Ok so it seems magento “calls home” and if magentocommerce.com goes down, so does the admin backend.  Interesting indeed.

The bug has been reported and we are locally tracking this issue at :

We are also looking into a more suitable fix, be it either core code or system level.

Thanks for the quick fix. Glad magentocommerce.com doesn’t go down too often!

You should be subsribed to the Mage Blog RSS to be updated about new versions. Then you can eaisly avoid these problems with a simple double comment-out:

app/design/adminhtml/default/default/template/page.phtml

<?php //echo $this->getChildHtml('notification_window'); ?>

<?php //echo $this->getChildHtml('notification_toolbar'); ?>

Presto.
