Dreamhost installation bug (was Using magento connect)

Is magento connect the only way to install most modules (such as blank and seo blank).  It says it installs the themes correctly, but I cant find them to set them as the site theme, and when I SSH in, I can’t find the physical files to add to SVN so I can edit them locally.

I fear I am completely wrong in my process, but couldn’t find a good tutorial on how to use magento connect to install a theme, and usage standards of SVN.

Thankyou,
Dan

Any ideas on this, as it has really been frustrating me.

This doesn’t appear to be limited to installing themes, but also covers any other installation through magento connect.  No errors are sent back, and it says it all installs fine.  Is there any good ways to test at all to help me debug this?  I don’t even know where it should be saving any files downloaded through connect.

Cheers,
Dan

Okay, since the first few posts, I decided to get it all setup locally, and it all works using XAMPP.  So assuming it’s Dreamhost, I looked at the instructions on this page:
http://www.webinade.com/web-development/installing-magento-open-source-e-commerce-on-dreamhost

I got to step 7, and then I get a new problem, when I put in the line:

./pear install mage-core/Mage_Pear_Helpers mage-core/Lib_ZF mage-core/Lib_Varien

I get the error message below, not sure where to go from there, I am assuming this may be where the problem is getting caused at the moment.

./pear install mage-core/Mage_Pear_Helpers mage-core/Lib_ZF mage-core/Lib_Varien
