Hi,

My client wants to have an online catalogue but does not want to sell online - that is to be implemented at a later stage (anywhere between months to years down the line). Can the shopping cart and payment gateways be disabled, so that it is just the products and prices on the site, but no option to buy?

Thanks.

Yes, you can.
Take a look at this two examples:

Thank you for your examples. That is the sort of thing that I’m after.
I’m new to Magento, and CMS in general, so could you, or someone else, explain how to create that in simple terms please?

Thanks again.

That two projects was created by Brandlive (http://www.brandlivecommerce.com/) (I work there).
In both examples, you can disable some Magento modules (checkout for example) and apply some modifications at your templates (removing all the Add to cart, User account and another references).

I wasn’t aware that the modules can be disabled, but that is exactly what I’ve been looking for. So now all I need to work on is the site design.
I am very grateful for your help!!

Yes, you can disable soem modules.
However, you gonna need to change the skin to avoid the add to cart and another references to the transactional part.
