I have been working on installation for weeks, and FINALLY have the GUI displaying properly.  Bad news, I am still getting some database issues.  Specifically, Fatal error: Call to a member function joinLeft() on a non-object in.  I am running XAMPP on an XP machine with PHP 5.2.4.  Some parts of the backend seem to work, but others don’t.

This is an example of the Categories section of backend.

Problem solved by reinstalling with the most current version (0.8.17240)

Zend exception error appeared immediately after install, but fixed by changing line 29 of the index.php

from
Mage::run(’base’);
to
Mage::run(’default’);

Hope this can help someone
