Hello,

we want to import categories from an old shop to this fantastic magento shopping system.

Till now, I can only import products and customers with the data flow importing tool.

Is it possible to import categories too?
It should be possible with a special XML File, right?

Does anybody has written an xml file for category import?

Would be very nice to get any help.

Kind regards,

Sebastian

Yes that is right. The current version can import the category id for each product but I want to import all categories with parents and childs first, not the products.
The products i want to import later, after I have imported all categories.

Hello Nafnaf,

i don’t understand your comment.

I want to link products to it, but later.
I first have to import categories, so I can link to them later.

I have more than 300 categories and I don’t want to import them by hand.

After I have imported the categories, I can import the products with the category ids.

I do not understand what kind of use it should be to import categories by ID number. Instead all distributors use alphnaumerical category and subcategory names like ‘notebooks’, ‘digital cameras’ aso. The actual dataflow module is completely useless for ftp transfered csv data as long as the categories can not be written into magentos database.
Datatransfer be able to create categories (alphanumeric) and then put the products into those categories. The categories ID number should be automatically created after that. Actually it is only possible to manually create all categories and then look for the categories ID, magento has created. And after that, the csv data must be edited by search and replace. That does not earn the name Dataflow.

I like the way Yahoo Stores dos it…

path= Digital Imaging:Digital Cameras:12 Megapixel

They also allow me me to specify an ID for the item, this allows me to specify my URL and when an order comes in it will use that ode, on the same note they allow me to upload a ZIP file of images (25M max) and the ID of the image has to be the same of the item, then i do not have to worry about the images there after....

what do you think???

Hello there,
i’am cscart & xcart integrator, i’am searching a free solution for my clients, Magento seems to be the right way, but
i don’t understand how magento is managing the categories !
Very strange way to import with Category_ID !
i think the best strategy is using some ‘/’ to séparate the categories ...

I hope the magento team be aware for this.

THNX

[slightly OT, but related] I can’t create new Categories… i get Fatal Errors. All seems to be correctly installed, htaccess file is the same from default and so on… i’ve installed the sample data (v1.1.2) and errors still occur…
any idea what’s goin’ on?

tia.
