How can I display categories on the homepage?

It’s always empty in my installation, no matter how many products I add (Qty=10, in stock), no matter whether I make the products and the categories active.
I have the 0.8.17… release. What am I doing wrong? Why is it so difficult to display a product?

This may or may not be the problem, but do make sure the categories Store View is your store.  Upper left corner, dropdown, the categories s/b showing in “English Store” not just All Store Views Also “Is Active” and Is Anchor if you want layered navigation

I can´t see my categories either...whats wrong

i’ve got the same problem, and i figured out i’m missing the dropdown box to select a store for my categories!

I attached a screenshot so you can see.

What can i have done wrong and how can i get this dropdown box?

You need to place the two categories that are under the default category inside of the default category. They should show up then.

Where do you go to check that?

I figured out why categories weren’t showing up.

The first level that you currently see is Default.

My menu currently is like this…

Default (first level)
>>>>>TVs (2nd level)
>>>>>>>Samsung (third level)
>>>>>TVs 2 (2nd level)
Cell phones (first level menu item also)
Lingerie (first level menu item also)

You can see that the First Level doesn’t show up on the menu, I guess the first level menu item is served as a way to organize your catalog list.

Wierd, but I at least now have a menu.

As the previous post mentioned you have to place all of your categories in the ”Default Category”.

Once they are in the ”Default Category” (To move them just Drag & Drop) if they still aren’t showing up on your front end, go to System >> Manage Stores, then click on ”Default Store Name” or if you have changed your store name, whatever is under the ”Store Name” row.
Then in the Drop Down Box next to ”Root Category *” select ”Default Category”. Save changes and test.

This will set the category ”Default Category” as your root category. This worked for me. I hope it helps. =)
