Hello all,

I have a website running Magento 1.2.1 that has been working well for several months. The problem I encountered recently is that navigating to any of our categories results in a 404 page (e.g. domain.com/parts/ for URL Key “parts"). I do not know what caused this problem. The catalog still appears to be working fine internally, as searching for products returns results as expected, and product pages also are fine.

Some things I already checked over:
* Category is active
* URL key matches url
* Products are associated with category
* Root category “Default category” is defined as parent
* Tried adding new category, renaming existing category, etc. in admin
* Admin -> System -> Configuration -> Catalog -> Category Top Navigation set to 5
* Admin -> System -> Cache Management -> Refreshed Catalog Rewrites
* Admin -> System -> Cache Management -> All cache disabled
* Removed all cache files in /var/cache
* Temporarily uncommented “#ini_set(’display_errors’, 1);” in index.php, but no errors were output.
* No output in Apache error_log

Despite looking into these things, I can’t figure out what’s wrong. Has anyone encountered this issue in the past? Any advice or suggestions?

Edit: CMS pages work fine. E.g. A page with URL identifier “about” works fine when I go to domain.com/about/. The problem is only occurring with the catalog.

I feel like I have been having the same problem. Though I have not been able to pinpoint it yet.

For example, in my store on a main category page the layered navigation what once were nice looking category urls now have urls like http://www.domain.com/store/main-category?cat=id.

I can get to http://www.domain.com/store/main-category/sub-category just fine,

but

When I go to http://www.domain.com/store/sub-category/ I get a 404 page… I feel like this used to work before Magento ver. 1.2.1.2.

Did you every figure out what was happening to your issue.

best of luck to us both smile

Sorry to kick this topic up again, but i find many people with the same problem.
There seems some kind of bug in the url rewrites when using the / as category supplement. The workaround is:

Go to configuration > catalog and change the category supplement form / to something like .htm
Go to cache an renew the rewrite rules.

Now the categories should appear again. Not the best fix, but it works.

No need to change it to .htm, just remove the trailing slash “/” as a suffix.

So whereas “/item/” returns 404, “/item” does not.

Be sure to reindex category urls after making the change.

Cheers.

Had the same problem with 1.4.1.0, but for only one category.

It appears that you cannot use a subfolder’s name of the magento root folder (app, downloader, lib, media, skin, etc) as a url key with the rewrite activated.

Cheers.

This was my problem with 1.4.2.0

The parent category was named media and the url key was set to media also. The parent category worked but none of the child ones did. So I just changed the url key for the parent category and that solved it.

Good catch nmikaty
