I had to swap to 777 to install, can I swap back when I move into production?

Yes, it is very important that you do not leave your files/directories with 777 permissions as this basically allows anyone to write to or delete your files. Set directory permissions to 755 and file permissions to 644, and you should be safe.

If Magento Connect does not work on your server with these permissions, you should consider using SSH to install extensions instead. If you have SSH access, you can run this command from your Magento root directory to install an extension:

./pear install extension_key
