I setup magento in my windows xp machine and i tried purchasing the item, it goes well upto payment mode , when i choose either of option (free,purchase order) from the list and clcked place order it shows “undefined” message box can anyone know solution for this.

This is because your local mail server is not setup, and Magento is trying to send the confirmation email.

You will need to set up your local mail server to complete the checkout.

What if you’re on linux and it used to work? Also I uploaded my mysql database over a new install and it messed up from then on. What in the database could cause this problem?

We’re having the same issue and our mail server is definitely running. The errorcode:
