<block type="core/text_list" name="" as="topMenu"/>

What is this referencing? I want to change the way it outputs, specifically right now I just want to get rid of the title for it.

Update: I found it. I think I finally understand this templating system (with some certainty, now). It does in fact use phtml files to call other phtml files that reference xml files that reference phtml files to tell the original phtml file that yes, I do in fact want to output a list. Convoluted? No, my logic just needs reconditioning apparently. Silly me, I guess something as simple as <? $nav(category) ?> would be too much to ask— we have to involve 5 phtml files and an xml file to get the job done… I don’t want to even think about how many PHP files and databases are involved, I’ve glanced at that mess and decided I was done with that.
