to shorten this thread to a managable size why don’t we just compile a list of every payment processor in the world?

ha, ok I do have something to contribute:

this might be a dumb question, but isn’t it possible to supply one “generic” gateway with a host of configurable parameters and then we just fill in the supplier-specific details into the blanks?

I’d bet good money that most processors operate in pretty much the same way, so I don’t understand why every processor needs its own custom-built gateway. Can anyone answer this?

Are you talking about Authorize.Net?  I believe it’s built right into Magento.
