Hey,

we are trying to work with SVN and it’s getting unbearable for us because of the number of files and the size of the project etc.. There’s one thing I noticed earlier—whatever I downloaded and installed through Magento Connect, is kept in downloader/pearlib/download.

For example:

./downloader/pearlib/download/Lib_Varien-1.3.1/Varien/Data/Form/Element/Textarea.php
./downloader/pearlib/download/Lib_Varien-1.3.1/Varien/Data/Form/Element/Time.php
./downloader/pearlib/download/Lib_Varien-1.3.1/Varien/Data/Form.php
./downloader/pearlib/download/Lib_Varien-1.3.1/Varien/Data/Tree
./downloader/pearlib/download/Lib_Varien-1.3.1/Varien/Data/Tree/Db.php
./downloader/pearlib/download/Lib_Varien-1.3.1/Varien/Data/Tree/Dbp.php
./downloader/pearlib/download/Lib_Varien-1.3.1/Varien/Data/Tree/Node
./downloader/pearlib/download/Lib_Varien-1.3.1/Varien/Data/Tree/Node/Collection.php
./downloader/pearlib/download/Lib_Varien-1.3.1/Varien/Data/Tree/Node.php
./downloader/pearlib/download/Lib_Varien-1.3.1/Varien/Data/Tree.php
./downloader/pearlib/download/Lib_Varien-1.3.1/Varien/Date.php
./downloader/pearlib/download/Lib_Varien-1.3.1/Varien/Db
./downloader/pearlib/download/Lib_Varien-1.3.1/Varien/Db/Adapter
./downloader/pearlib/download/Lib_Varien-1.3.1/Varien/Db/Adapter/Mysqli.php
./downloader/pearlib/download/Lib_Varien-1.3.1/Varien/Db/Adapter/Pdo
./downloader/pearlib/download/Lib_Varien-1.3.1/Varien/Db/Adapter/Pdo/Mysql.php
./downloader/pearlib/download/Lib_Varien-1.3.1/Varien/Db/Exception.php
./downloader/pearlib/download/Lib_Varien-1.3.1/Varien/Db/Select.php
./downloader/pearlib/download/Lib_Varien-1.3.1/Varien/Db/Tree
./downloader/pearlib/download/Lib_Varien-1.3.1/Varien/Db/Tree/Exception.php
./downloader/pearlib/download/Lib_Varien-1.3.1/Varien/Db/Tree/Node
./downloader/pearlib/download/Lib_Varien-1.3.1/Varien/Db/Tree/Node/Exception.php

Aside from Lib_Varien, there’s also another copy of the Zend Framework, etc.. So this is—so I think—not necessary. Or does Magento Connect need these files in the future? I’m thinking the PEAR installer (in the back) usually does a garbage collection after installing packages, but in this case, it looks like files are kept around.

I’d like to get rid off it, but I don’t really feel like breaking my installation.

Feedback is very appreciated.

Thanks,
Till

Hi till!

Did you solved this problem in the meantime? I also want to clean up magento before I go live.

Thanks!

Yes I did, sorry for not updating.

Anyway, we use SVN for our VC and decided to exclude the download directories from SVN (which by itself also made the SVN repository more responsive). So far we haven’t encountered any issues when we moved the store from development to staging, etc.. So whatever is in those directories is not being used and can be cleaned up.

I also avoid using Magento Connect since all updates through it broke anyway. For the initial setup it’s certainly nice to have, but later on, I just didn’t use it and patched my files through SVN directly.
