Shipping Assumptions via Geo Ip

In a brain storming session with one of my clients we started working on a way to make assumptions on shipping by using geo ip information.  Users can then imput their zip codes for a more accurate quote on shipping.

Being a project manager among other things I tend to think about all the things that can go wrong.  I would hate to see a customer turned away because of a ridiculous quote.

Any feedback on this would be greatly appreciated.

I understand, it’s like being called by your last name or middle name instead of your first name, making it obvious that the wrong person is trying to be too personal.

It should be noted that this issue normally only appears for the first order. After that you would know the customer’s location.

I’m not a specialist on this but I believe most IP assignments are fairly static, at least on the country level. But already if you use data that is more than a few months old, you may get a few errors here and there. Deriving region or postal codes from an IP address will have much higher error rates, but I don’t know how high.

From an interface point of view, I believe the only 100% fail-safe way is not to be too precise, and use the GeoIP info just to set initial defaults. Like you can always say “shipping for Asia varies between a and b”, because it’s always true (even if it may be irrelevant if the customer is in fact in Europe!). When customers want a more exact quote they can zoom in to their actual location.

1 - If you are devising a plan to set up an extension that allows you to have a country specific products and if you need a convenient way to manage it, then our GeoIP Country Lock Magento Extension is the best answer for you. It allows you to have this functionality right out of the box. The functionality that was attained through multi store can now also be actualised through this magento extension.

2 - A little more advance Geoip Magento Extension is worth taking a look at.
