Can we not CHARGE someone until the item SHIPS? (Pre-Authorization)

The way we do business now, for a variety of reasons, is that a customer isn’t actually charged for their order until that order ships. At checkout we pre-authorize the card to male sure funds are available. Is this something someone has done already? Or is this more likely to be an issue with our payment gateway and not Magento?

We are looking to do the same thing. We’re hoping to pre-auth the transaction, and then finally authorize the transaction once it ships.

We are also hoping to do this with PayPal. Unfortunately, I see no signs of PayPal actually supporting this.

Yes, it’s possible and yes, PayPal does it and yes, Magento supports it. It’s basically down the to the payment method’s Magento Module and for PayPal, it’s all ready to go. Just set to authorise instead of sale.
