Magento

I have been round and round the forum but can’t seem to find the answer to this one. I have found out how to get a products attributes programmatically. But if I have the current url or current category, how do I get the complete list of applicable attributes for that category?

And 5 minutes later, I find this: http://www.magentocommerce.com/boards/viewthread/32542/ which seems to cover part of what I am looking for.
