Been with Hostgator business plan for 2 months now. It’s about £10 a month after conversion. I know its US based but my testing site appears fast and the support they have offered so far has been brill.

Hey Don,

I transferred to gator host the other day and your right they are great - their support is literally amazing.....however....on a shared hosting package they dont offer any magento optimisation...not even gzip!!

speed is so important for conversions..im really surprised there isnt a UK host offering a specialist magneto package..apart from simple servers who i would recommend you do NOT HOST YOUR SITE WITH

NuBlue offer really speedy UK hosting, great optimisation and again, great Magento specific support. We started on their shared-server Magento package, but moved up to a VPS when we opened a second Magento based site.

100% recommended.  grin

thanks for your recommendation! i took a look at them, the seem great apart from the really low amount of web space on offer...1400mb on the platinum package…

Hi cjpwood

You are right about that. However they appeared well prepared for questions regarding magento installation on their shared server and even sorted out file permissions on ‘Chat’. I installed magento and then did a dry run with sample data. It appeared to work fine. I guess once my site is ready to roll with customers I will be able to gauge it’s real speed.

just my update on the hosting if anyone is interested..i moved again from gator to crucial to. Gator were fine, but the lack of magento optimization was a pain. Crucial are great and even tho the server is in dallas its much faster. I am now on an 80% score from yslow - which is about 20 points better than when i was with gator smile

Great tips!

Does anyone have any optimization techniques for configurable products with 300+ associated products?

Simple products load in less than 1 sec, but the configurable products take anywhere from 6-10 seconds to load.

I too had several hundred configurable products to cope with. They each had so many options that pages were sometimes taking as much as 40 seconds to appear! I used Catalog Cache (http://www.magentocommerce.com/extension/2138/catalog-cache) and category times are now just over a second. Unfortunately for us we had done a lot of custom work on the product pages and Catalog Cache was breaking there, when enabled it had a similar effect on product times too.
This extension specifically helps with configurable products and the categories they are in. I found turning flat catalogs on made things worse again.

i think possibly the best way to speed up magento is simple, and involves ditching it for OSC, prestashop or others. Magento is the most overcomplicated and convuluted ecommerce platform i’ve seen. Even the admin is slow.. i’m currently working on it for an SEO client, and quite frankly its appalling and takes me four times as long to do anything than it does with other platforms
. This is what happens when you let developers loose on the streets without supervision.

also I like to include this at my myhtaccess.conf, for complain to Add Expires headers: (http://developer.yahoo.com/performance/rules.html#expires):

# 104 weeks
<FilesMatch “\.(ico|pdf|flv|jpg|jpeg|png|gif|js|css|swf)$">
Header set Cache-Control “max-age=62899200, public”
</FilesMatch>
# 7 DAYS
<FilesMatch “\.(xml|txt|html|htm)$">
Header set Cache-Control “max-age=604800, public, must-revalidate”
