Magento local dev running incredibly slow

So I’ve read all the blog posts about magento running slow, but the large majority seem to only address production server issues and compare web hosts.

I’m running a local install with the following hardware and software:
Magento 1.2.1.2
Windows Vista Ultimate x64
Apache 2.2
MySQL 5.0 x64
4GB RAM
Intel Core 2 Duo 2x2.2 ghz

Now I realize this isn’t amazing hardware for a production server running 100 customers at the same time - but when I load a page locally and am the only user, I expect it to be snappy! Page loads take about 8 seconds.

Already did:
query_cache_size=50000000

The httpd.exe process goes up to 80% CPU usage every time I load a page.

I read a forum about possible issues with MySQL 5.0 + Windows + UTF-8 (http://www.wampserver.com/phorum/read.php?2,41650), but another user claims to have the same setup and have no issues.

I’d like to get to the bottom of this, as it seems there is a definite speed problem with Magento, and it seems to be more of a bug than just an optimization issue.  Some users seem to get amazing speeds on low-end machines, others (like me) have a reasonably fast system and are getting horrible results.

I get the feeling like there’s some magic setting or flag that, if switched, will improve performance 100 fold.  Any input is appreciated.

So I tried magento out on a different machine just to see if it would run faster with MySQL 4.1.  Still have the same problem.

New machine specs are as follows:
Windows Vista x86
Apache 2.2.8
PHP 5.2
MySQL 4.1
1GB RAM
Intel Core 1.8 GHz

So the funny thing is that even though it’s less powerful than my previous test (32 bit and 1.8 ghz), the page load times are almost exactly the same.

Pages (including admin pages) take about 15 seconds each to load.

I am also running Magento ver 1.2.1.2 localy on:

Windows Xp Sp3
Apache 2.2.11
PHP 5.2.9
MYSQL 5.1.0.22

Tthe admin is very slow when I view Categories (sample data from magento), also when I create a categorie, it is very slow, the wheel just keeps spinning, the CPU runs at 100% with iexplorer.exe as the running process.

Has anyone got a fix or is it a bug and the Magento developers are aware of this?

For testing purposes I ran Oscommerce and Joomla on the same machine and I don’t experience any speed issues, I also believe its a Magento issue.

I have looked at other posts regarding slow issues but nobody has a resolution, are the Magento developers aware of this issue?

If someone has got Magento working locally without any speed issues, please help..

Testing this further I installed Firefox browser on my PC and the slow issue looks like its now resolved, my slow issue is with Microsoft IE 6.

Testing Firefox with local store, creating category and updating products is faster, its only takes about 7-8 seconds which is better that not happening at all.

But when I assign attributes to Groups it is to slow and httpd.exe runs at 100% and I het an error after 20 seconds “unable to complete request”

So I ran the Magento profiler… hopefully it’ll help the dev team to answer some questions.

I gotta give it to magento - it may be slow, but everything you could ever think of (from features to debugging tools) is in there! Great job guys.

So here’s the breakdown (it’s definitely on the server side, not browser-dependent):

This is for index.php (home page) - you can see that the total server time to load the page was almost 14 seconds, which is quite lousy.

Code Time
mage 13.9024
mage::app 5.7715
mage::app::init 5.7013
mage::app::init::config 5.2939
mage::dispatch 8.1450
mage::dispatch::routers_match 8.0374
mage::dispatch::controller::action::cms_index_index 7.0574
mage::dispatch::controller::action::cms_index_index::layout_render 4.9905

Those seem to be the main culprits.  If anyone else who is having slowdowns can verify that those are the culprits, perhaps the dev team could help us discover what causes these slowdowns (and how to fix it!)

@willyb: i suggest you revert back to 1.2.1.2 This is what we did, and whilst it has a ton of bugs, at least it is usuable.  You will need to manully fix the bugs you encounter though.

We have shifted away and are looking at another commerce solution.  Magento may still have a place, but it is costing us a truck load of money to delve through the crap associated with it.

Watch for the rats jumping ship........
