No thats not it, im talking about removing the piece of text saying:

For the frontend:
app\design\frontend\default\default\template\page\html\footer.phtml

For the backend:
app\design\adminhtml\default\default\template\page\footer.phtml

Although you might want to keep it, since the Magento Team really did a nice job with this product eventhough if it is still in beta.

I been trying to remove the front end footer that says - “Magento is a trademark of Irubin Consulting Inc. DBA Varien. Copyright © 2008 Irubin Consulting Inc.” but with no luck. I tried the aforementioned suggestion of editing the front end “footer.phtml” - app\design\frontend\default\default\template\page\html\footer.phtml but yielded no result. I am new here so any help on this is greatly appreciated. Thanks smile

P.S. I am using the latest version of Magento - Ver. 1.0.19870.2

Solved it! Need to turn off cache on the website under System - Cache Management. After editing footer.phtml, I just refreshed the browser and voila!

I understand that one can update the footer.phtml file in the following location (if you’re using the default theme):

frontend/default/default/template/page/html/footer.phtml

But, I was hoping there was some way you could update it in a less intrusive way so that you may upgrade the theme without losing modifications.  Similar to what can be done with app/code and app/code/local.  Is it possible to override a single template file for a theme without copying an entire theme and making it your own?

Yes, see this screencast. You can override single files:

Where do i change the copyright text in the footer?

GOTO Admin -> Configuration -> -> Design, and than expand Footer bar in the right side area, and then edit the Copyright.
