Just another quick demo site using (almost) real life data. It demonstrates products, categories, manufacturer attributes.
Check http://mag.piposoft.org
(Demo is valid only on the English Store for the moment)

Good job.

I really hope people push the design limits once we all go into full-on mode.  There is plenty of room for experimentation in layout, attributes, navigation, and media.

Looks Good!

One thing that I noticed was concerning the layered navigation.
On some of the categories there is 4-5 price layers and some have only 2.
Below are 2 examples:

Price
0.00 EUR - 1000.00 EUR (779)
1000.00 EUR - 2000.00 EUR (50)
2000.00 EUR - 3000.00 EUR (6)
3000.00 EUR - 4000.00 EUR (3)
4000.00 EUR - 5000.00 EUR (2)

Price
0.00 EUR - 1000.00 EUR (417)
1000.00 EUR - 2000.00 EUR (1)

The second example isn’t as helpful for the customer as the first.
Would it be more useful if the system always broke the price into a predetermined number of layers? Provided there are enough products in the category to warrant this.

Just a thought.

Catalog import (categories, products, attributes) was done with multiple scripts and macros. It’s very specific to my database and setup and would be difficult to use in other environment for the moment.

I agree with Rusty on the Price layered navigation issue. Moshe did document current price break range rules, you can also check the code in: app/code/core/Mage/Catalog/Model/Layer/Filter/Price.php

I’m thinking about a different approach, i’ll let you know if I get good results…

When you were importing products, did you run into any trouble with the product pages not wanting to display?  I’ve got our categories and products (6000 or so of them!) imported, but when you try to go to a product page (from the category page or a search results page) you get a 404 Not Found error.

Thanks!

Matthew:

I did not run into much troubles with the products import, most of the issues I had were related to the category paths in catalog_category_entity_text table. About your product issue, you should empty product related tables in your mysql database, then create a new product in Magento backoffice, and see which tables are impacted (check number of rows for each table in phpmyadmin, then the contents for the new lines in these tables)

Just noticed that on Firefox 2.0.0.6 on Windows XP and quite possibly lots of other browser / os combinations that the top dynamic navigation drop down menu can not be seen fully on the product information page as the product image obscures it.

I am almost done with the new price range split routine, which can be seen on my demo site http://mag.piposoft.org

It does split the price range in more equal parts, according to the number of products in each range, so it gives a better price
distribution across the products listing (low/mid/high/very high end)

My code still need some additional checks and cleanup, I’ll release the modified source code when I’m done, if it can be of any use.

Yoav,

In current implementation, yes, the split is always done in 4 parts.

Basically I build an array with all the prices for the products in the layer, sort the array on the price value,
then I build ranges using the price from position 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4 from the array.
Each of these prices is then adjusted to the nearest value that can be divided by 50, so the price for each range
look more “rounded”.
