How to automatically select a flat rate shipping option, and show this in the onepage checkout BEFORE proceeding to checkout

This arises because our organization has a $5.95 flat rate shipping for all orders, regardless of size and destination.  For us, it doesn’t make sense to show the estimated shipping box on the cart page (which we’ve removed), AND it also doesn’t make sense to force the customer to select the flat rate shipping option in step 4 before we show them the $5.95 shipping charge.

Interestingly, if you do go to step 4 in the onepage checkout and select a shipping option and then go back to your cart, the stock renderer does show the shipping charge you selected.  This is exactly the behavior we want, BUT we want that to happen automatically.  In other words, when the user goes to the cart page, the totals section should include the shipping and should render as:

Subtotal $ 5.95
Shipping & Handling (Flat Rate - Fixed) $ 5.95
Tax $ 0.33
Grand Total $12.23

Any ideas on how to do this?

Lazzymonk made an extension for this: http://www.magentocommerce.com/extension/285/lazzymonks-auto-apply-default-shipping

Not sure if it still works with the current version but you could at least modify the code to make it work - it’s a starting point if nothing else.
