Try this:
Change the directory permission where you have installed magento in to 755. Also change the index.php to 755. Hope this fixes your problem.

How far do you go with the installation before you get the error?
Does you server meet the minimum requirements for Magento? (System Requirements)

i have this error, it occurs in the front end, when i click on any link.

“Internal Server Error”

All permissions appear to be OK, all 777

Admin end is fine, just hesitant to do much work there in case the frontend problem is irreparable.

you are going to need to check the error log from your control panel and not from your browser. This will give more details regarding the problem you are facing.

I found that the best way to resolve all of these ISE 500s is to avoid uploading the archive file altogether. So, if you are getting these errors after uploading the archive, I recommend unpacking the archive on your hard drive and uploading the entire directory via FTP. This fixed most of the issues for me.

I still encountered some JavaScript errors after doing it this way - the admin menus did not show and the checkout screen was broken. All I did to fix this was change the permissions on the js folder to 755 and the js / proxy.php file to 644.

js/proxy.php was resistant to chmod via ftp, but was ok to be changed via CP. [shrug]

Thanks for the advices. Now that Magento is running, store setup is like a hot knife through butter.

Wow, what a program!
