Design documentation still needs written. I will try to gather some people from the community later to help write the docs and help in this area. I haven’t had a lot of playtime with M yet.

Because magento uses zend new framework which is based on the MVC (Module, View Controller) approach, where design is seperate from business logic, it won’t be like many other simple php applications you have seen.

You need to start reading the zend framework documentation to figure out how everyhting should work.

Although I am sure magento has added alot of coustom classes, which will help with the functionality that the software provide.

So just get reading.

True, the Magento system structure is a bit different than the average (simple) ZF app. Although most of the design can be customized with JUST CSS. smile

Try disabling styles on the Demo Store, you’ll see just how much is controlled by the CSS Stylesheets.

@5:

No way, hose. I hate it when web apps say “customizable with CSS”. Well, I want to move everything around, remake the design from the ground up. And my CSS skills are not akin to the designers who contribute to the CSS zen garden. I can’t do that much with CSS. I need to actually be able to tweak with the HTML.

So, I’m going to give it a shot and I will contribute what I learn to the wiki. =P

Austin,

Unless you want to have a similar look as the current Magento site, you will need to know CSS to customize it completely. Or wait for someone to come out with something you like. If you want to move stuff around, that’s understandable. You should be able to do that in the view. I’m just expressing that there is a whole lot you can do if you have some decent CSS skills. Otherwise you’re stuck for now. rasberry

from what i can see now, its a very nice templating system, im trying to work on it myself but i have determined that by the time i figure out all the code Varien will have an article on it explaining exactly what i discovered, so for now i just play

i dont see that its all css though, the blocks and such are assigned by xml, which is what austin was referring to i believe.

maybe if we could get one sample design template from varien, what an “aftermarket” template would look like, it seems theres many many files in : magento\app\design\frontend

maybe these are just form the beta?

Yes a direct html contol gives you full sense of control.

But yes CSS these days control major design layouts, its imp to make use of both together.

Guys, you should all be using XHTML and CSS - these are the standards and they are not that difficult to learn. Table based layouts are a thing of the past for very good reasons. CSS allows you full control over the layout as well - nested tables are simply ugly. It seems that there are some people that are upset that Magento is using “standards” for the designs.  This is a very good thing…

I don’t think people are upset more than they are just simply lazy rasberry
I agree, people designing/developing websites these days should know CSS and tableless layout, but we can force them. We can simply just point them in the right direction.
