Creating product-list, is it supposed to be this hard?

I’m about to give up on Magento and it’s monstrous complexity.
Getting the most basic things done (like getting a category listing on the left hand site) have already taken hours of my time.
Now i’m stuck again at the next hurdle.

Suppose I wanted to create an <ul> list (e.g. on the homepage) of products with a certain attribute set (let say: ‘popular’).
How would I accomplish this, seemingly, simple task?

Thanks in advance for any help or motivational speeches,
Fili

The answer isn’t simple, but it can be solved. There are a multitude of threads on this very forum explaining how to do it. Search “bestsellers” and “new items” and “sidebar” and “products on home page” for clues — I’ve seen threads on all those topics that explain different ways of doing exactly what you’re suggesting. It’s not a built-in widget (although it probably should be), but Magento is wide open to relatively simple customizations to allow you to do just about anything, if you have the patience to set it up.
