make a navigation list by attribute

I have an attribute called “brand” and I would like to make a left navigation with the list of brands with links that then filter out the products in those pages. I have been going through the forum and this thread seems helpful , but it’s too complicated.

With the help of firewizard, I have a module called loadCollection.php with this code:

class Mage_Catalog_Model_loadCollection extends Varien_Object
public function loadCollection() {
->getResource()->loadCollection$this );

Then, I have a template file called brands.phtml with this code:

<? $collection Mage::getModel('brands/brands')->loadCollection(); ?>

And finally, in catalog.xml I have this:

<reference name="left">
block type="core/template" name="catalog.leftnav" template="catalog/navigation/brands.phtml"/>

I am getting this error though:

Fatal errorUsing $this when not in object context in C:\Archivos de programa\xampp\htdocs\magento\app\code\community\Mage\Brands\Model\Brands.php on line 2

Is this possible to do?
