What I would like is for the layered navigation to appear on every page (excluding product page)?
And for the main page to list only the major categories

Similar to http://www.buycostumes.com/

I would like to have on the index page:

---------------------
Girls
- category 1
- category 2
- sale
- new
----------------------
----------------------
Guys
- category 1
- category 2
- sale
- new
----------------------
---------------------
Label
- category 1
- category 2
- etc
----------------------

When you click on the bold category link - it should take you to the category simliar to the top.menu links.

Any ideas how I would do this?

For reference my site is:

Hi, not 100% sure but I will give it a try.

First you make the category page as Homepage - I am not exactly sure how to do it; I think you need to modify the ‘template /Cms/ default/ ‘home.phtml’

Then use Layered Navigation, to do so you must first create “Girl”, “Guys” and “Labels” Attributes from the “Manage Attributes”, and must select the input type : Dropdown, then in the Label/options, you ‘Add Option’ like so:

- category 1
- category 2
- category 3

It may also be useful to create Attributes sets for “Girl”, “Guys” and “Labels” .

These articles will help you understand how Attributes and Layered Navigation works.

To follow the example, you may want to take a look at Magento demo site, I highly recommend this page
http://demo.magentocommerce.com/catalog/category/view/s/digital-cameras/id/26/

and look for ‘Megapixels’ as example.

Then login to demo store admin: http://www.magentocommerce.com/demo
Go to ‘Manage Attribute, look for ‘’Megapixels’ attribute, check it out how it was setup.

if still not clear, you may also want to check out a camera product sample.

The product page from the Magento default theme doesn’t show the layered navigation so this shouldn’t be a problem.

Not a pretty solution but until Magento team comes out vertical navigation themes, I don’t other way to do it.

What exactly would you put in to modify /Cms/ default/ ‘home.phtml’

All my page says is:

There was no Home CMS page configured or found.

I already have the layered navigation set up and it works on all other pages but the home page which is a CMS block for what reason I cannot conceive. I’ve managed to show products on there but not the layered navigation and that is crucial. Any help would be appreciated.

I’d be interested in a solution for this problem, too.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance,
Burt
