Is there a way to categorize products in bulk through Magento’s admin?  I know this can be done (sort of) with Manage Catagories -> Category Products, but this doesn’t allow you to recategorize products outside of the base category.  I’m looking for something that will allow me to select a set of products based on some search criteria and move them into different categories.

Check out Store Manager for Magento.
http://mag-manager.com/

It can do this and many other operations very effectively - mass product changes, mas imports etc
Your feedback here will be appreciated.

Couldn’t this be achieved with just uploading the .csv file again with updated category numbers?

And how to work with that csv when you have 1000 products? (or 100 000)

You are right for very small number of products, but definitely need proper tool like Store Manager for larger amounts of products.

I’ve been trying to use Store Manager for a couple weeks now. Its brilliant in theory however it is a long way away from production use for magento. I’m getting all kind of error messages and even the submit bug form that appears frequently does not work.

Simple functions take hours to master. For example I was testing the import/export products feature. I have given up after hours of testing when I exported current products and attributes and tried to import them again (without any modifications) it didnt work.

Their support is also very slow and the forums are not great. Hopefully this product will mature sooner then later because its a great idea.

Thanks for the link to mass product relator. I’ll try it out now…

Hello,

It is possible to add products to categories in bulk with Mass Product Actions extension. It enables you to assign multiple products to categories right on the product grid.
