Don’t get me wrong Magento has a great potential and I will not complain, but even xtCommerce has this feature!  wink

Why do I need that feature: I have custom attributes like different handles for a door. The customer decides more on how it looks then on the price or the name. Therefore I must add images of the handles. I could set up grouped products but it makes no sense since neither of those components are saleable on their own plus in grouped products one can not display an option with a negative price, because for simple products negative prices are not allowed (who knows why???).

Along with that feature it would be great to see a template for the custom options.

Thanks, Carin

I agree.  I have the same scenario, by for me I offer patches to each coat.  They have a choice of several options of patches and I would like to be able to show what the patches look like.

I’d imagine that this would be accomplished by adding to the MySQL database and modding the code a bit… Although I am so new to the Magento platform that I haven’t even installed it yet.

I will be working on this as I need it, so if you want to know the modifications I did PM me and I’ll let you know once I do it.

I am interested.

we provide to print some custom text. This is easy with a text field.
But the customer can decide on a font type, i.e. Arial or Times New Roman.
So I would like to add a tiny image of some sample text what Arial or Times New Roman looks like.

Us computer nerds we all know, but the ‘stupid’ customer out there doesn’t....

I have a certain way done to where you can modify your template to display the images, but I’m currently working on a way to where you can simply upload the pictures via upload and use those for the custom options… Give me another week and I should be done.

I am looking for something similar. Ideally, an image would be associated with each custom option and when you make a selection from the drop down menu, that image will change accordingly.

For example, for my tshirt shop… the customer can select a Tshirt color… there would be a small image associated with that option and if the custom selects black, the shirt image would change to black as well.

The following link shows how to modify the base image through a drop down selection… pretty good but not exactly what I want.

Sorry!  I’ve been SUPER busy trying to get my few stores done that I haven’t had time to make an easier way for the custom images.  Give me a few here as I’m only human!

This weekend I may just post the hard way to do it using themes.

Alright, so I will show you guys the hard way to do it.  It works with messing with the templates.  I will work on a better way to do it next month, but for now gotta keep up with deadlines.

I am using THIS PAGE as an example.

So first you would enter in all of your custom options and create your product.

Then view the source and below the custom function copy and paste from the

<dl>
to the last
</dl>
. (Usually lies between a
</script>
and a
</fieldset>
but it may vary.

Take that and edit it in dreamweaver with tables or CSS aligning the picture with the drop down or text bar however you want it.  (anyone who needs help, I’ll glady help you out on weekends starting in July if you shoot me a message).

Now, navigate to…

/app/design/frontend/THEME/DEFAULT/template/catalog/product/view/options.phtml
.  And replace
<dl>

<?php foreach($_options as $_option): ?>
        <?php
echo $this->getOptionHtml($_option?>
    <?php
endforeach; ?>

</dl>

With the code you edited in dreamweaver.

But remember that you have to create a separate theme for each custom product… For mine I would have

/app/design/frontend/silvereagle/200ct/
—So Silver eagle being the kind of chip set and 200ct being the actual product.

Now upload and there you go!

Any questions let me know!  And as I said before, I will be starting on a backend solution in July, I’m just super wrapped up right now!

I’ve done this but it’s very very ugly. I uploaded the images to the image gallery and named them according to their color and made a text field custom options for the colors. When the page loads, I find the “color” option via Prototype and hide it, then build (per JS) an image switcher which sets the value of the hidden color text input to the image name when the image changes.

That’s kind of why I said it was the hard version, because it’s kind of impractical.  But it gets the job done for the time being.
