I’ve same problem and i follow all the instruction of here and nothing, any idea more?

CONNECT ERROR: Can’t write to file: var/package/tmp/package.xml

I also have the blank screen problem with Magento Connect Manager.... This is what occurred which started mine.. I am on Magento 1.7 and everything was working fine.... Then I went to backups in the menu and hit the button for system backup.... It appeared to hang for a long time and then I eventually shut it down.... I don’t know if it was finished what it was doing or if I interupted it, or what. But after that when I go to the Magento Connect Manager, I just get a white screen......

I have turned the error logging on in the index.php but nothing appears on the screen when I go to the Connect Manager, nothing also appears in the error_log file… I am a newbie at all this and not really a programmer… I have to get this working but I am at a loss… I have read about possible permission issues causing this, but like I said, it as working fine before this happenned… I HAVE to get this working… any help would be appreciated immensely! Please help.
