Where to start with creating Magento Interface/Theme?

Hi all!

I have been trying to get my head around this interface/theme system that magento uses for quite some time now and still feel like I’m no closer to creating my theme.

I tried following the design guide at: http://www.magentocommerce.com/design_guide
And it didn’t help one bit.

I have been doing PHP, HTML, CSS, JS and all that for a long while now and currently work with three osCommerce stores with my custom themes.
And I know Magentos design usage isn’t anything like them but I still feel that I have easy to learn new stuff.

Now I thought I’d ask here, where should I start to try to grasp this whole new method of designing your e-store?
Any suggestions or help is very welcome since I have a project coming up and I don’t want to take a step back and use another e-commerce solution.

You can try starting to fiddle with the blank theme, edit the css to see how you can get the style you want.

Then you can start editing phtml files, to know what each one does in the admin you can go to ‘System/Config/Development’ and enable the template routes, that will tell you what phtmls the frontend is using for each page.

You can also check the xml files, under the layout folder, that are the files that determine the structure of each page.

Hope this helps, if if you have any questions then just ask

Well that’s just it.
I downloaded the blank template and I have no problem understanding the css and js.
I understood most of the phtml files and made some changes there.
But when I get to the xml files the understanding stops :(

I tried making some changes (some basic ones, removing the compare products from the sidebar) and ended up with nothing changing.
I have disabled the cache so thats not it, I also turned on the Hinting so I could easily see the files included and that speed things up.
But still the understanding of all the options in the xml files is beyond me, is there a guide just for that?

I know, layout files are the most difficult part of magento to understand..

Take a look at this guide another user made, it may help you sometimes:
http://magsvento.se/magento-references/magento-layout-files-reference

Sometimes things are really simple, like moving a block inside one xml, and other times you cannot understand how something as straight foward as duplicating the code to create another block is not working.
My suggestion is for you to keep trying, trial and error, and everytime you get to do something try to document it so you know how to do it the next time. It will be frustating at first but you will start getting along with magento and keep developing faster.

And any specific question you have you can just ask here in the boards as someone will always be here to help.

Don’t forget to clear the cache so you can see your updates.

Agreed. Even if your cache is disabled you will still need to refresh it for some of the changes to show.

Under System > Configuration, be sure to select “Main Website” as opposed to “Default Config”. Then on the left menu under Advanced > Developer > Debug you should see that option.

I would suggest you go to a website that explains all these steps in detail. Start a webshop with Magento
