Did Varien code this forum software? If so, Ii have a suggestion. Add to My Account: Preferences the global options:
(o) Don’t notify me about forum posts
(_) Notify me via email when someone posts in a thread I start
(_) Notify me via email when someone posts in a thread I start or contribute to
[Reset all notification settings for my posts to match the above]
Then in each post you make you’ll see:
[ ] Notify me via email when someone posts in this thread
or
[ ] Don’t notify me about posts to this thread
