I have almost got everything covered I think.

I too am on hostgator shared hosting. I had them enable SSH access, uploaded the .tar.gz and extracted using PuTTy. I also edited the .htaccess file that is in my root Magento folder.

Here is what I have in my .htaccess:

php_flag magic_quotes_gpc on
php_flag short_open_tag on

DirectoryIndex index
.php

RewriteEngine on

RewriteCond
%{REQUEST_URI} !^/media/
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^/skin/
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^/js/
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond
%{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteCond
%{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-l

RewriteRule
.* index.php

AddHandler application
/x-httpd-php5 .php

Not sure if thats correct or not. I’m not sure on creating the php.ini file - I simply created a new file in Notepad and saved as all files and called it php.ini this is the code I have in that file:

magic_quotes_gpc On

I then uploaded that file to the root of my Magento folder too. I also changed permissions on all of the required directories. Still no luck, same Internal Server Error.

Just to make sure I have the files in the correct place, my installation is at /public_html/dev/magento/magento/ and I have placed the files inside that last magento directory, the one containing all of the files. Is this right?

Am I missing something here?

Thanks

Remove the above two line from your .htaccess file and that should work.
The file should contain only

DirectoryIndex index.php

RewriteEngine on

RewriteCond
%{REQUEST_URI} !^/media
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^/skin
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^/js
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-

I just moved over to Hostgator from Dreamhost and I am having some setup problems.

Here is what I have done:

1) Uploaded magento zip file and unzipped using SSH on the server to this domain: http://www.ridingrails.com/
PHP Info: http://www.ridingrails.com//info.php

2) Set permissions to 775 on these files/folders:
magento/var/.htaccess
magento/app/etc
magento/var
magento/media

3) Changed my .htaccess in the magento folder to look like this:

DirectoryIndex index.php

RewriteEngine on

RewriteCond
%{REQUEST_URI} !^/media
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^/skin
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^/js
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-
RewriteCond
%{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-
RewriteCond
%{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-l

RewriteRule
.* index.php

AddHandler application
/x-httpd-php5 .php

4)Set php.ini in the root of my public_html folder to have one line:
magic_quotes_gpc = On

Unfortunatly I am still getting an Internal Server error.  Any ideas?
