To fix this I added:
<code>ini_set(’memory_limit’, ‘-1’);
</code>

to: /magento/downloader/pearlib/php/PEAR/Registry.php on line 34.

Hey! How are you? I know you posted email two years ago regarding fixing fatal memory error messages. Can you tell me if your fix is still working. If so what can I do? I have spent more than 100 hours figuring this out because I am a novice...Thanks.

Also what program can I use to edit phtml?

Important: Set it back to the original value after the upgrade !!!
