Magento connect - suddenly permission problem

We installed Magento about a year ago. Installed several extensions through magento connect no problem.
In magento connect we used FTP deployment type for installation of extensions.

Last week we wanted to install a new extension and got the following error message:

CONNECT ERRORPlease check for sufficient write file permissions.
Your Magento folder does not have sufficient write permissionswhich downloader requires.

Very strange as it worked without any problems for one year now.

We tried several things:

Checked our ftp details no mistakes. checked folder/file permissions also no mistakes.
Tried to change magento connect deployment type to local filesystem, after we change the setting and press save it changes back to ftp.
Deleted a file so it forces to use local file system, still the same error.
With SSH added the apache user to the group which has full access to the directories. Still the same error.

Does someone knows any other possible solution?

I have the same problem. Everything works fine. I didn’t understand what’s wrong?
