URGENT Problem with 301 redirects - Help!

Hello to all, thanks for taking time to read this post.

I am working on some 301’s redirects within the htaccess file. I have almost 2000+ urls.

I am experiencing a problem with some of the redirects.

for example :

Redirect 301 /eng/sexperts/jane-greer http://www.mysite.com/sexperts/jane-greer.html

when this is attempted in the browser the redirects breaks
and here’s how the browser or magento handles it

http://www.mysite.com/sexperts.html/jane-greer

I cannot understand or figure out why its not re-directing correctly

sexperts is a category and jane-greer is a sub category of sexperts.

anyone could please pitch in , give some suggestions, or ideas to this type of url rewrite behavior. I would greatly appreciate it as we have just launched this site using the magento enterprise.

If you need any additional information, just ask..

Thanks

Allen

Hard to say but I assume it must be Magento’s own URL redirection kicking in somehow?

Redirect 301 /eng/sexperts http://www.mysite.com/sexperts.html

and then this one will work fine..

Redirect 301 /eng/sexperts/jane-greer http://www.mysite.com/sexperts/jane-greer.html

im just baffled, its breaking on the root category levels

anyone have any suggestions or ideas?

Hi Monti

Thanks for the reply,

However, this doesnt help me so much,

the problem Im having or seeing is any of my root category urls prevent any urls below that category ie: sub categories to break

if i enable a 301 redirect for a root category

redirect 301 /category/sub1 http://www.mysite.com/main-cat/sub1

it redirects but the final url will be for example http://www.mysite.com/main-cat.html/sub1 and it lands on 404 page

for some reason it puts .html in the url

and thats because i have a rule that redirects /category/sub1 http://www.mysite.com/main-cat.html
if i remove that rule then the above rule would work,

i cannot understand why it would input a .html into the url when its a sub, its as if its redirects first to the root category.

any ideas??  is there a backend setting im overlooking or something?
