I’m new to php, tableless css, Magento and other open source management systems. I was using Dreamweaver to build sites before but now I’m curios about what else is out there. What do you use? What’s the best/ industry standard?  I was looking at Coda but wanted to know if there’s something better before i spent money on it. Please advise.

I’ve used Coda for a good three months now.  Love it!  Eliminates the need of an ftp app and is one of the most comfortable apps to develop in.  Very easy to use.  A million times simpler than Dreamweaver.

I’m a big fan of editplus, it allows me to “work on the ftp server” in a secure way, has great search and replace features, it’s small and fast, and in my experience rockstable.
It’s just an editor though, so you won’t get the php coding equipment you have with zend studio or eclipse as it’s more like a buffed up notepad than a dreamweaver clone.

On a PC I like EditPlus.  I haven’t used Eclipse before, I didn’t know about it--time to check it out!

On a Mac I like BBEdit.  Coda is nice too.

I WANT to like Zend Studio, but when you’re dealing with included classes, its debugging functions start to completely shut down.

Of course, someone would have to say this:

Bash, vim, konsole (with tabs), or screen.

Sometimes Kate with sftp:// support.
