Yes, can anyone show us how to just import new categories and their names from a simple csv file?

Surely, this can’t be hard to do?

HELP smile

Thanks,
John

The info here might help you write some SOAP code to do it:

http://www.magentocommerce.com/wiki/doc/webservices-api/api/catalog_category#catalog_category.create

http://www.magentocommerce.com/wiki/doc/webservices-api/introduction

I just wrote a hack script to import configurable products that links directly into the Magento code, but this stuff would probably be way easier. I was under the gun for time, or I probably would have explored this stuff instead.

This page from the Wiki might be of some help:

http://www.magentocommerce.com/wiki/how_to_import_category_structure_with_products_using_dataflow?do=show

I’ve used it successfully to import 4k products with their categories on the fly

(Note that a quick search ‘import category’ in the search box would have given you the page as well)

Thanks validBen,

I’ve seen this wiki article before, my problem is that I don’t know how to implement it.

I just can’t get my head around how to customise or use the overload class for the file Product.php - I guess this is pretty fundamental with magento and easy, but I just don’t get it.

If you could give me an idiots guide of how to implement it - I would pay you for your time - I really do need to import a lot of categories quickly.

Thanks for your time,
John

Yhea I understand about the overload stuff. It took me a while to figure it out. I’ve found a quick tutorial about overloading, using this actual product.php file as example:

http://labs.justsearching.co.uk/magento-class-overloading-updateproof-hack-47.html

Once you’ve got your overloaded class set up, follow the wiki and you should be able to import the categories.

Let us know if it helped and if it works =)

as long the soap-api isn’t finished (a lot of stuff is still missing inside especially atribute-control), i see no chance to use the api :(

as soon as i need a mysql-hack, the api is useless.
also the api-docs are incomplete and you need a lot of try&error;to find out the way you need to be done.

there are so many things people could be done if this api would work :(

If the product.php ‘hack’ works, it does not take care of the categories images…

@ validBen

Thanks for the overload tutorial - I think I’ve done this now as per the wiki article
http://www.magentocommerce.com/wiki/how_to_import_category_structure_with_products_using_dataflow

Next problem.... how do I use it?? Do I need to write a new dataflow Import/Export profile?

I’ve tried this - but the category name etc isn’t revealing itself in the ‘Add Field Mapping’ section - only the category_ids !!!!

Please can you nudge me in the right direction? Where do I go from here?

Cheers mate,
John
