I am looking to incorporate - a product sizing, colour, and availability grid on my Magento e-commerce site

A combination of this:

http://www.amplebosom.com/ulla-dessous-elise-non-wired-bra-p755.php

and this:

http://www.bravissimo.com/products/lingerie/everyday-essentials/melody-balconette-bra/nude/pnm2nu/?show=16&sort;=1∪=kk&level;=1

for example.  (Yes, I sell lingerie...)

Any thoughts, suggestions, extensions, ideas?

With great appreciation…

Nili

Hello Nili!

To allow your clients see the variations of size and color you have for the products you can use custom options or create configurable products.
In case with custom options, there will be included all the variants, even if you do not have one now, as custom options do not allow to track inventory. For example, in case you are out of stock of white bra size 36C, it will be still shown at front-end and will be available for purchase.

If you want to track inventory, configurable products are for you, however, there is a bit more trouble to create them. Check this article on how to create configurable products -
http://www.mag-manager.com/useful-articles/tipstricks/what-is-magento-configurable-product-how-to-create-magento-configurable-product

Also the difference between custom options and configurables you may find here -
http://www.mag-manager.com/useful-articles/tipstricks/simple-products-with-custom-options-vs-configurable-products

Also I want to tell you that in case you want everything to look like as in the example you provided, you need to modify your template so or custom options or configurable products will be shown from the front-end in necessary way.

Hope it helps.

Nili,
Personally I would think twice about going with a grid layout as it would increase the difficulty for mobile shoppers to complete their order as the form factor of some devices becomes too small to accurately press such a large array of small options.

If you are set on going with a grid layout some options to consider when selecting a developer or extension. First if you have to manage inventory in the website make sure it uses configurable products instead of just custom options. Second make sure to either make the theme responsive or have a secondary theme that utilizes standard drop downs and set exceptions for mobile devices to use that theme.

Regards

Thank you, everyone, for your responses....

I will look into the options mentioned and post whatever questions may come up!

Many thanks, again!
