Can Magento navigate with custom search fields?

In Magento we have layered navigation where people have to click on the different criteria to filter down to a certain product.

What I need is the same only working differently.

Is it possible to replace the criteria to click on with a search field?

For example. I sell tyres with many different sizes. There are to many sizes to put in a vertical menu, so it’s better to replace it with a search field only for this particular feature of a product.

So people should be able to filter down within 1 search on:

-Sort of tyre
-Type
-Width: To be typed in
-Height: to be typed in
-Inch: To be typed in
-And some more criteria wich doesn’t have to be typed in but can be selected.

So the meaning is that the client can type in some values and select others and after that they can click on the “search” button to get their results. Is this possible in any way?

Yes, just code it!

Though it seems easier and perhaps more user friendly to replace the written out, vertical list of options into a drop down.

So instead of:

Tyre Size:
36”
37”
38”
39”
etc.

You simple make it so it reads: Tyre Size [Please Select]

That saves screen real estate and keeps it simple from the user’s perspective.

Okay thanks for the answer.

I am still a novice PHPer, but this is a good reason to keep on learning smile

It’s about a B2B site and it seems that these kind of customers prefer to type the sizes into the systems rather then selecting it, because that’s faster for them and they are already used to do that with other systems. But for inches you may be right so I will look into that.

Thanks again for the confirmation.
