Hi, my customer runs an IBM AS/400 accounting system, and they want us to make a bridge/pipeline between Magento and their system. The data will be sales, billing, payment, inventory management, shipping. Has anyone seen an plug-in solution or does anyone have solid experience integrating this?

IBM AS/400 aka eServer iSeries

This is a standard problem integrating Magento with Enterprise class software such as SAP, Oracle, etc. Magento is a fantastic product however it is not enterprise class such as WebSphere and ATG and is closest but under Hybris which is mid-size. Facilities such as two tier currency instead of three tier currency (local, transaction, document), no PIM and very few consultants with Magento and Enterprise class software experience cause difficulty integrating the tools.

The integration is normally one of custom ETL solutions implemented by mid-enterprise level consultants; implementing enterprise ETL or ESB tools such as Tibco, Informatica; or adapting existing small-mid solutions such as Talend, Pentaho, Mule, pre-developed extensions to your needs. The integration points in the enterprise solutions are often not clear and require top-level consultants, when it comes to accounting you have the three key problems of quantity, quality and timeliness. Simple factors like technical developers discussing integration with senior enterprise software consultants usually does not go very far, adding business issues such as double entry, master data, audit trails makes it impossible, it is like a Russian linguist discussing a point with a French linguist without an interpreter.

On the whole, it can be done but whatever quote is provided, unless the consultants come from an enterprise background double the quote (at least) and add some senior resource with technical and business knowledge. We know this as a fact, some of our consultants have come from an Enterprise background, SAP, Broadvision, Tibco, Oracle but also moved in to eCommerce in the small to mid-end solutions. Over the next decade Accenture, PwC will move down towards mid-market solutions and the small consultancies will move up towards mid-market solutions, it will be an interesting time when they come towards each other. We are one of the first companies to have proven enterprise experience and implement small to mid-size solutions directly, being at the beginning of a trend requires patience and confidence in our experience. Due to this trend we have acted increasingly as the interpreters between technical, business & management; and as interpreters between small-mid consultancies, enterprise consultancies & end clients.

There are very few mid-level tools in the market, therefore you are looking at enterprise class tools or trying to find enterprise level consultants who can adapt the small-mid end tools to enterprise levels, it is a rare skill. We recently came across a job posting on Elance to connect Magento to SAP ECC, given an SAP installation with consultants runs at a minimum in the $100s of thousands and normally millions, spending $3,500 to integrate Magento to SAP with consistency, reliability and timeliness is not going to work. We hope that you are able to find a satisfactory solution, to date we only know of one provider apart from ourselves with proven enterprise background who support small-mid size solutions such as these.

The challenge isn’t so much in integrating Magento with the AS400 as it is the software that’s running on the AS400.  What application package are you running?

You have two options to interface Magento with your AS/400 application, point-to-point (coded extension) or hub (ETL) integration. In your case point-to-point will be a custom development, for hub (ETL) it will either be an online solution or a hosted solution such as Pentaho.

There are pros and cons to all of the options depending on confidentiality, governance, cost & time to implement and functionality required. For point-to-point you would need to use internal developers or a consulting company. Chosing online ETL often has lower implementation costs but with less ongoing flexibility and control, self-hosted ETL using off-the-shelf tools normally costs more to implement but has more ongoing flexibility and control

You may want to refer to this information.

We have checked with the ETL department and one of the tools that we use has a built-in AS/400 connector for self-hosted solutions, otherwise you may want to talk to our SaaS division who are releasing an online ETL service. If we can be of further assistance let us know.

Hi, I know this is an old post, did you find a solution?

We are a company that specialise in the integration of eCommerc platforms with Enterprise ERP apps, especially on IBM iSeries AS400 and SAP.

Here is an example of Magento running with a real-time integration with Infor system 21 on an AS400. http://www.antler.co.uk/
