Error when Importing Products

I am fairly new to data importing, I have a csv which I exported and editted with my new products.

It looks as follows:
sku _type _category _root_category _product_websites description image name price short_description weight qty
13685 simple Foods/Dog/Treats Pre-Pack Root Catalog base 13685.txt 13685.jpg 8in1 Delights Dog Rawhide Bones Large 4.69 8in1 Delights Rhide Bone LgeX6 1.446 169818

It has about 24000 lines of products, when I try to import I get the following error:
Invalid value for Attribute Set column (set does not exists?) in rows: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 36, 37, 38, 39, 40, 41, 42, 43, 44, 45, 46, 47, 48, 49, 50, 51, 52, 53, 54, 55, 56, 57, 58, 59, 60, 61, 62, 63, 64, 65, 66, 67, 68, 69, 70, 71, 72, 73, 74, 75, 76, 77, 78, 79, 80, 81, 82, 83, 84, 85, 86, 87, 88, 89, 90, 91, 92, 93, 94, 95, 96, 97, 98, 99, 100
File is totally invalid. Please fix errors and re-upload file

I go going to system>import then selecting Product, Append Data Complex and selecting the file. Am I doing this wrong or is my csv incorrect?

If you are getting problem in importing the csv file for the selected products, it means your csv format is may not be in UTF-8 mode .This error occurs mainly when you are preparing csv in microsoft office . It will be nice to use open office and manage your csv in UTF-8 mode.

In such-cases you can also follow this method to import the csv file for your selected products,

1. Login into your Admin account.
2. Click on import all products
3.  Now upload the CSV file and press continue and edit .
4. Click on the “Run Profile” and then select the imported file .
5. Finally the CSV file is download for the imported products.

Actually, to upload data via Magento admin your file should correspond to strict requirements Magento has to the uploaded file. In case you are missing of some data, you either will receive error or your file won\’t be uploaded at all. To get the example of .csv file which your import method accepts, you can export a couple of products. However, if you are using default import/export method, the file for import can be a bit different than for export.

From the error you received I assume that most likely you did not indicate attribute set for your products. Please, do modifications in your .csv file and add there the column with attribute set and indicate its name.

In case you need the solution with more flexible system of file importing and accepting, i can offer you to try to import via the desktop application called Store Manager for Magento. There is free version you can download here -

The application allows to import file of specific structure. Also you can set some data on the fly right in the process of import.
In any case, you can try it out.

I’ve tried to do this and I’m still getting the same errors: Skip Row Import “value type” Invalid.

It’s unusual that it would ask for an attribute_set column. Part of me wonders whether you might have an attribute_set column in there all the way off to the side of the doc that you failed to delete. Do a ctrl+f find and make sure that there IS not an attribute_set in the doc definitively.

If you can guarantee there is no attribute_set column, try adding one. Make the column header _attribute_set and then put Default or whatever your attribute set is as the value in the column.

or the last two days I have looked into issue with importing configurable products linked to simple products using the ‘direct import’ functionality of Magento (v1.8.1) as well as the ‘data flow’. I have written code to format the input .csv file in different formats and layouts and my conclusion is the following:

Option 1 - Direct import functionality
- It does work, but the file requirements are very strict and it behaves unpredictably (example is that a clean export and import without any modifications does not even work, let alone your created files).
- It is quite slow
- When successfully importing configurable products including their link, there is still the issue that new options and categories need to be created manually in Magento before the import, which takes a lot of time in case of thousands of options

Option 2 - Data flow functionality
- It works fine and the file restrictions are a lot less, I was able to import products quite quickly, both configurable and simple products
- It is possible to define your own delimiters making it is easy to import data
- It is not possible however to link configurable products to simple products (the exported example file does not even include the fields to do so, although there may be an option in the background somewhere).
- It is not possible to create new categories or options and the import does not give you a warning for this either, so after upload you will find out that the link to the option is not there (how can it be, the option is not created, so does not exist)

Option 3 - Use custom scripts in .php or .sql
- This does work, but requires a lot of technical skills and there is a risk of messing up your database

Option 4 - Use a plugin
- My problem was resolved quicly using the plugin ‘Fast Product Import’ of Ecommerce team
- I have tried one of my existing files giving me importing issues for a day with the standard Magento import, made slight modifications based on the plugin user guide and tested it on the Ecommerce team demo site. It literally worked in 5 minutes and:

* It imports configurable and simple products plus their relation;
* It created new options if they do not exist yet;
* It creates new categories if they do not exist yet (I have not tested this thoroughly yet);
* It is much faster than the standard Magento import and basically extends the existing data flow profiles with advanced options.

My recommendation is that if you need to upload only simple products or non-related types with few options go for option 2 (not 1). If you have a large number of products and especially if you have a large number of configurable products and different attribute options definitely go for option 4. I am not saying there a no better plugins out there, but this one works quickly and fine for me.

Hopefully this saves other people from going through the same frustrating experience
