Can’t really make the logo any smaller, or it becomes hard to see. What steps do I need to take to make the template header wider to fit the logo, while keeping everything the same as the default template layout? Please take a look at the home page:

Go to catalog/view/theme/default/stylesheet

and look for:

/* header */
#header {
height: 150px;
margin-bottom: 7px;
padding-bottom: 4px;
position: relative;
z-index: 99;
}
#header #logo {
position: absolute;
top: 26px;
left: 15px;

Adjust the header height and this will make header larger to enable your logo to fit.
i had to do this for my logo.
